All the Colors of the Dark — Chapter 248

248

Saint drove out of town in the shadow of the storm and the local cops, the cruisers numbering in double digits as word spread far. Rain battered the windshield, falling so hard for a moment she stopped dead in the middle of the quiet road and waited it out, looking for a break, looking for calm however distant.

She found it when the house came to view.

The very same house that had hung on the wall above her piano for a lifetime.

Saint watched it like a mirage, like at any moment it would vanish and she would return to chasing shadows.

She eased the car up to the gates, climbed out, and set off up the driveway on foot, not moving to shield herself from the rain, not noticing that her hair matted down and her clothes soaked through.

Saint knocked on the door, followed in Patch’s footsteps as she rounded the house and peered through the windows, looked for life but found none at all.

She looked out over land that drowned beneath midnight cloud, the

thunder so deep she felt each roar.

Her eyes found the barns.

One stained a shade of red that had not dulled, the timber newer.

She crossed the grass, did not flinch when lightning struck the horizon, the air charged as she made it to the red barn and gently pushed the door.
