All the Colors of the Dark
All the Colors of the Dark — Chapter 226
226
A hundred miles to the south, Patch sat by the bluff and followed the snake of the Mississippi River up to the oxbow. His hair cropped close, face clean-shaven. Beside him sat a blue leather satchel with clothes and money and most everything he would need. He had found it in the trunk of Cooper’s car before he dumped it a couple of miles from anywhere.
He wore a ball cap that shaded his face, and though it bothered him something awful he left the eye patch in his pocket and wore dark glasses.
Patch strolled along till a sunset chased iron water from bold to abstract, and land and sky met for a moment he wished he could paint.
He found a copse and beside it lay down low before the sedges, his bag a pillow as he waited on nightfall. The next day the checkpoints would
move and he would cross into Tennessee.
The next day he would be closer to her.
