Folklore and Mythology — Fairy Tales, Legends, and the Deep Roots of Storytelling
Folklore is the oldest layer of literature. Before individual authors, before the printing press, before any of the categories we now use to organize fiction existed, human cultures were telling and retelling the same core stories: fables about clever animals; myths explaining natural phenomena; hero legends; ghost stories; fairy tales that carried moral instruction inside plots of witches, wolves, and enchanted forests. These stories were passed orally, generation to generation, for centuries before being written down. What we now shelve as "folklore" is really the record of that long oral tradition — the point at which someone finally sat down and put on paper what people had been telling each other for a very long time.
The Book Renzo folklore shelf gathers this material across cultures and traditions. Aesop's Fables — short stories, most only a few lines long, each ending in a moral — have been read in Western education for more than two thousand years. Whether Aesop himself existed is unclear; what matters is that the fables attributed to him have been reworked in every generation and every language, and remain some of the shortest, sharpest examples of story-with-a-point in world literature. The fables of the tortoise and the hare, the boy who cried wolf, the ant and the grasshopper, the fox and the grapes — these are not just children's stories but distilled arguments about human nature.
Alongside Aesop, the shelf includes the folk and fairy tales collected by the Brothers Grimm in the early nineteenth century, and other collectors of the same period. The Grimms' original versions of these tales are considerably darker than the sanitized modern retellings most contemporary readers know. Reading them in their original forms is a way of encountering the folk imagination before it was cleaned up for children's picture books.
