CHAPTER FORTY

AN UNRAVELING OF DIVINITY

AND MORTALITY

he leather cuffs bit into the skin of my wrists. Again.T I shifted my weight, muscles tensing as I sought a more comfortable position. The manacles clinked against their chains, the sound reverberating through the stone chamber. The dim light filtering through the grate above cast elongated shadows across my bare skin, highlighting the bruises Valen had left the night before. Purple-blue marks encircled my hips where his fingers had dug in, branded me. I didn’t try to hide them. They were badges of a battle I was beginning to win.

As much as Valen wanted to deny it, last night had changed everything between us. I had watched his eyes darken with confusion, then hunger, as I taunted him, invited him, demanded he take me. And he had—oh, how he had. His hands had been rough, desperate. His body against mine, inside mine, had been brutal and consuming. The memory of it made me clench my thighs in anticipation.

But it was his surrender I savored most—the moment his careful control had fractured. The instant when the torturer became the slave to his own desire. How far could I push him tonight? Could I coax the god from beneath the mortal skin?

It was only a minor benefit to infuriate Death as well.

I refused to think of how Death had entered my mind last night, how his voice—low, rough, aching with a jealousy that would have been comical if it hadn’t been so devastatingly effective—had filled the dark corners of my

skull even as Valen fucked me from my manacles. How he had broken his promise to not speak to me again, so soon after his grand declaration. It was easier to focus on the victory, on how I’d turned my captor into my supplicant for one breathless instant, than to dwell on the sick thrill that had shot through me when my harbinger commanded my pleasure in the midst of my anger with him.

The guards had not been gone long, which meant Valen would arrive soon. Would he expect me to have returned to my usual defiance? To have regretted the vulnerability I had shown the night before? Perhaps he thought I had been possessed, driven by the fever of his bite and the magic of his

blood.

He would be disappointed.

The faint echo of approaching footsteps reached me, and I straightened as much as my bonds would allow. I wet my lips, tasting salt and the faintest metallic hint of blood where I’d bitten them in thought.

I would meet him with desire again, would watch his control fracture under the force of my surrender. I would make him see me not as a thing to be broken or tortured, but as a woman to be wanted.

I watched hungrily as the door swung open and Valen stepped inside. He moved with that casual arrogance that had once made me tremble with rage and fear, his dark eyes sweeping over my naked form with an expression I couldn’t quite read. Surprise. Suspicion. The faintest hint of hunger he was trying to suppress. He wore his customary black, the fabric rich and severe against the pale perfection of his skin. A stark contrast to my nakedness, to the vulnerable position in which I hung. But vulnerability was no longer my weakness—it was my weapon.

“Wife.” His voice was deceptively soft, dangerous. “I see you’ve dispensed with your clothing again.”

“It seemed simpler this way,” I replied, my voice a deliberate purr. I shifted slightly, the chains above me clinking with the movement. “You’ve ruined so many of my garments already.”

His eyes narrowed, dark lashes casting shadows against his cheeks in the dim light. He took a step closer, careful to keep distance between us. Was he scared of me? Scared of what I might do? The thought made me smile.

“You don’t have to do this,” he said, his tone suddenly practical, almost irritated. “If your clothes are ruined, I’ll provide new ones. I am not without mercy.”

I laughed at that—a genuine sound of amusement that echoed off the stone walls. “Yes, because you have been so merciful in the past.” I flexed my wrists against the manacles, feeling its bite against already tender skin.

“As this is the first I’ve received undergarments, I’m more inclined to keep them. I did not want them to rip when you remove them.”

Anger at my mockery flashed in his eyes, followed by that hint of confusion. Yes, it seemed he had expected me to return to my silent defiance.

“You mistake me, wife,” he said, his voice dropping lower, threaded with subtle menace. “Last night was... an aberration. A momentary weakness on my part. It won’t happen again.”

I tilted my head, studying the perfect planes of his face. “No? So tell me husband, are you here to return to our usual routine? Torture and tears and pleas for mercy that never come?” I leaned forward, my voice dropping to a husky whisper. “Or did you lie awake last night, thinking of how it felt when I yielded to you willingly? When I moaned your name not in pain, but in pleasure?”

His hand shot out, quick as a viper’s strike, tangling in my hair and yanking my head back. The sudden pain made me gasp, but not in the way he expected. The sound was breathy, edged with desire.

“Do you forget who I am? My purpose for you?” he hissed, his face inches from mine, his breath hot against my lips. “I am a God, little mortal.

One of the first. I have broken cities, brought kings to their knees. I will not be swayed by the wiles of a mere girl. A nothing.”

But even as he spoke, I could see the pulse hammering in his throat, could feel the subtle tremor in the hand that gripped my hair. He was affected, whether he wished to be or not.

I didn’t struggle against his grip. Instead, I arched my back, pressing my naked body closer to his clothed one. “I have not forgotten who you are, Vharok,” I murmured, watching his pupils dilate at the sound of his divine name. “You know… this is your fault.”

His head tilted so that I knew he was listening, although he said nothing, his gaze drifting to my lips. Wetting them, I continued, my voice so low I could barely hear it myself, “You told me that monsters were made.

Shouldn’t you take responsibility for what you’ve created?”

He growled—a low, dangerous sound that vibrated through his chest and into mine. His grip tightened in my hair, pulling harder, and I didn’t try to hide the moan that escaped me. The pain blurred into something else,

something that made my skin flush and my breath quicken.

Valen’s eyes widened fractionally, his lips parting in surprise or anger—I couldn’t tell which. His other hand shot out to grip my hip, fingers digging into the bruises he’d left the night before. The pressure should have made me cry out in pain. Instead, I sighed, leaning into his touch.

“Stop this,” he commanded, but his voice had roughened, lost some of its cold control. “I came here to hurt you, to remind you of your place. Not to...”

He trailed off, his grip on my hip flexing unconsciously.

“Not to what?” I ask, deliberately provocative. “Not to fuck me again?

Not to make me scream your name as I come apart around you?” I licked my lips, watching his gaze track the movement. “Why not both, Valen? Why not hurt me and have me too? You seem to enjoy it when I suffer. And I...” I paused, blinking slowly, “I seem to enjoy suffering for you.”

Something shifted—a crack in the mask of control. His hand released my hair only to close around my throat, squeezing just hard enough to make breathing difficult but not impossible. I didn’t struggle against the pressure.

Instead, I relaxed into it, let my head fall back, exposing more of my neck to his grip.

“You think to tempt me,” he said, voice taut with restrained fury. “To make me weak with want. It won’t work, Princess.”

“I thought you were a god. One of the first.” I shot his own words back at him, my voice slightly strained by the pressure on my throat. “Isn’t desire the ultimate form of conquest? To make someone want you so desperately that they’d do anything to have you? I thought we’d already agreed that was what you wanted from me. My surrender.”

His fingers tightened, cutting off my words. For a moment, darkness bloomed at the edges of my vision, and a strange euphoria swept through me —the peculiar, floating sensation of oxygen deprivation. Just when I thought I might lose consciousness, he released me, and I gasped in a desperate breath.

“I want your suffering,” he said, but his voice lacked conviction. “I want you to pay for what your father did to me. For the years I spent chained in this very dungeon, tortured and questioned and mortal.”

I met his gaze steadily, still breathing hard. “Then make me suffer, my king. But don’t pretend you don’t enjoy it when I find pleasure in the pain you inflict.”

His grip tightened painfully, and I didn’t try to hide the small, breathy

whimper that escaped me. I watched in fascination as something changed in his eyes—black bleeding into where white should be, slowly consuming the human appearance of his gaze. His skin flushed, taking on a copper hue that wasn’t entirely natural.

“You play with fire, little queen,” he whispered, his voice deepening, acquiring an echo that hadn’t been there before. “You provoke a god.”

“Good,” I breathed. “Burn me.”

Something splintered in his expression—the last veneer of humanity giving way to something older, wilder. The black in his eyes consumed the last of the white, his entire irises swallowed whole until there was nothing but an endless void. His features remained the same, but something about them shifted subtly—angles sharper, lines more pronounced, as if the bones beneath were rearranging themselves.

The copper tone of his skin deepened to crimson, like blood under a pale moon. His fingers on my jaw grew hot, almost burning against my skin.

I should have been terrified. Instead, I felt a perverse thrill at having provoked this transformation, at having stripped away his carefully maintained control.

“Is this what you wanted to see?” His voice was barely recognizable now, layered with power and rage. “The monster beneath the mask? The being that slaughtered your family, that destroyed everything you’ve ever loved?” ‘Careful, little fawn,’ Death’s voice reverberated in my head. ‘I’ve told you before, the form of the divine tends to break those lesser than them.’ Instead of heeding Death’s warning, I leaned closer, as much as my chains would allow, and whispered against the Blood God’s burning skin, “Yes. Show me the truth of what you are. No more masks. No more pretending. Just you and me.” I paused, letting my lips brush against his jaw.

“I’m not afraid of you, Vharok.”

He jerked back as if burned, staring at me with those bottomless black eyes. For a moment, he seemed at a loss—caught between rage and desire, between the need to punish and the need to possess.

“You should be afraid,” he said at last, his voice a growl that seemed to emanate from the very stones around us.

I met his gaze unflinchingly, feeling a strange calm settle over me despite the danger in which I found myself. “I’m not.” I shifted in my chains, deliberately emphasizing my nakedness, my vulnerability. “What will you take from me today? My pain? My pleasure? Both?”

His massive form trembled with barely contained restraint. The crimson of his skin seemed to shimmer, the black of his eyes drowning out any trace of humanity. He was beautiful and terrible, a being of pure power and hunger.

“You want to play, Princess?” Vharok’s voice had dropped another octave, resonating with something ancient and terrible. He traced a finger down my cheek, then suddenly dug his nails into the soft flesh beneath my jaw.

The pain blossomed sharp and sweet. I gasped, not in protest but in pure pleasure. “Haven’t we been playing from the start?”

His features darkened even further as he recognized the challenge in my words. His hand moved from my face to my hair, yanking my head back to expose my throat again. The collar dug into my skin, the position precarious and vulnerable.

“You want pain?” His breath was hot against my ear. “I can give you more than you could bear.”

His other hand closed around my ribs, nails digging into the spaces between bone with calculated cruelty. In the past, such treatment would have made me begin to find that place of nothingness, to retreat within myself. To

hide.

Now, I arched into his touch.

“Do you promise?” I whispered, watching the shock register in his eyes.

Then, startlingly, he began to laugh, low and slow, as if he had suddenly come to some realization.

He gripped my chin, pressing against the corner of my mouth with his thumb. The touch was almost tender, a mockery of comfort, but his black eyes burned with a feverish intensity that was anything but gentle.

“So that’s it, isn’t it?” he asked, his voice a rasp of copper and smoke.

“You want to know what it’s like to be fucked by a God?”

I could barely breathe, the chains of anticipation tighter than the cuffs around my wrists.

“I think that is it,” he continued, his thumb pressing into the split of my lip. “It’s terribly mortal of you, wife. To want to be monster-fucked in your dungeon cell. To crave the thing you should most fear.”

My blood roared in response to his words, a dark fire igniting within me as I arched my back as much as the manacles would allow, my naked body pressing against the fine fabric of his clothing. The cuffs bit deeper into my

wrists, drawing thin lines of blood that trickled down my forearms. The sharp sting only heightened my awareness of every point where his body touched mine.

His hand found the bare skin of my thigh, fingers digging into the soft flesh. I gasped as his fingers traced higher, leaving trails of heat across my skin.

Valen’s breathing had grown heavier, each exhalation burning against my lips where his were inches away. Our eyes remained locked as his hand continued its upward journey, rough calluses catching on sensitive skin, until his fingers found the point between my thighs.

“So wet,” he groaned, almost to himself. “Soaked.” His thumb circled, teasing but not entering, drawing a whimper from my throat that I couldn’t have suppressed if I’d wanted to. “You know how to get what you want. Tell me.”

I strained even closer, the movement sending fresh pain lancing through my shoulders, but it was distant, secondary to the sensation of his hands on my body, his breath against my skin.

“I want to break you,” I breathed, the truth slipping from me unbidden.

“The way you’ve tried to break me.”

His eyes widened fractionally, then narrowed to dangerous slits. Without warning, he pressed closer, his body pinning mine against him, his hand moving from my chin to clasp my throat. His fingers worked between my thighs, no longer teasing but possessive, demanding.

“I am unable to break,” he snarled, but his voice cracked on the final word, betraying him.

I laughed softly, the sound cut short when his fingers found my clit, pinching with deliberate cruelty. Pleasure spiked through me, sharp enough to steal my breath. My back arched involuntarily, wrists straining against the manacles until blood flowed more freely down my arms.

The scent of my blood seemed to amplify his transformation. His nostrils flared, and the copper tint that had been creeping across his skin suddenly intensified. His eyes, already dark, bled to solid black.

His movements grew rougher, the hand at my neck tightening until spots danced at the edges of my vision, while his other hand continued its relentless assault. I should have been terrified—I was terrified, somewhere deep beneath the hunger that had consumed me. But terror, too, had its own sharp pleasure, its own dark thrill.

I bit my tongue hard enough to draw blood as the spots turned darker. The metallic tang filled my mouth, and Valen’s eyes fixed on the crimson stain spreading across my lower lip. Something shifted in his expression—hunger becoming something deeper, more primal.

I wanted to ask him to relax his grip, allow some air to reach my lungs.

Instead, I leaned forward as much as my restraints would allow and pressed my bloodied lips to his.

My blood mingled between us, copper and salt. For a heartbeat, he froze, loosening his grip, shocked by my audacity. Then he responded with violence, crushing his mouth to mine, teeth clashing, tongues battling for dominance. The kiss was war—a continuation of the battle we’d been fighting since the moment he claimed my kingdom.

The taste of my blood seemed to ignite something in him. His skin burned even hotter against mine, his form growing larger, becoming something even less human than before.

A tremor ran through his body, the hand at my neck tightening to the point of pain, the other sliding up to grip my ribs, drawing a whimper of displeasure from my throat. I could feel heat emanating from his palms, unnatural and increasing by the second.

“Look at what you’ve become,” he growled against my lips. “My perfect little ruin.”

The heat from his hands suddenly became searing. My body jerked as his fingers burned into my flesh. Something was wrong—something beyond the usual cruelty, beyond the careful calculation of his torture. This was uncontrolled, unexpected.

“Valen—“ I began, alarm threading through my voice.

He didn’t seem to hear me. His eyes had taken on a strange glow, his features contorting as the god within him surged. The copper sheen of his skin gleamed metallic in the torchlight, his body vibrating with barely contained power. Where his hands touched me, I felt something foreign enter my bloodstream—hot and caustic, like liquid fire. A power I recognized, but

never felt like this.

His power. Blood power.

The pain transcended anything I had experienced from him before. This was elemental, primal. The raw power of a god flowing unchecked into mortal flesh. I screamed then, all pretense of pleasure forgotten as agony consumed me. My vision blurred, darkness encroaching at the edges.

Blood—my blood—flowed freely, not just from my chafed wrists but from beneath his fingers, from where his magic carved unseen wounds into my flesh. The crimson streams painted patterns down my naked body, dripping to my feet on the stone floor.

Through the haze of pain, I saw his expression change, the hunger in his eyes shifting to something else—confusion, then dawning horror. He looked down at his hands, at the blood coating them, as if seeing them for the first time. The glow in his eyes flickered, humanity reasserting itself momentarily

over divinity.

“What—“ he started, his voice cracking.

My mouth filled with copper, warm and thick, choking any words I might have formed. It spilled over my lips with a cough instead, running down my chin to join the blood streaming from the wounds in my sides. Wounds he had made without meaning to—without consciously deciding to destroy the toy he’d been playing with.

Somewhere, distant but insistent, I heard another voice—Death, calling my name with growing urgency.

But I couldn’t answer him either. All I could focus on was the pain.

Valen’s hands still gripped my waist, holding me up, but they no longer burned with magic. Now they trembled, the fingers that had torn through flesh and vein suddenly uncertain. I watched with detached fascination as he carefully held me, taking my weight so that the manacles no longer bit into my wrists.

“Hold on,” he murmured, though to me or to himself, I couldn’t tell. “Just hold on.”

One hand left my waist to fumble with the locks on my manacles, movements uncharacteristically clumsy. His hands shook as he worked the mechanisms, fingers slipping in the blood that coated both our bodies.

The first manacle gave way, and my right arm fell limply to my side, sending a fresh wave of agony through me. I might have screamed. I couldn’t be sure. Sound itself seemed to be coming from very far away, muffled by the roaring in my ears that matched the rhythm of my failing heart.

Valen’s face was close to mine now as he reached for the second manacle, his features twisted with concentration. My blood was smeared across his copper skin, staining his perfect face, matting in his dark hair where it had fallen forward. His jaw clenched so tightly that I could see the muscle jump beneath his skin, a vein pulsing at his temple.

The second manacle released, and I collapsed entirely, unable to support my own weight. Valen caught me, his arms encircling my broken body with unexpected gentleness. He lowered me to the floor, kneeling beside me, his hands hovering over the wounds in my sides as though uncertain whether to touch them.

“I can fix this,” he muttered, but his voice lacked conviction. “I can —“ His hands descended, pressing against the worst of the wounds, and fresh agony exploded through my body. I screamed again, the sound tearing from my throat like something alive. Valen jerked back as though burned, his eyes widening further.

“It’s getting worse,” he said, his voice rising with something that sounded almost like panic. “It’s rejecting me, it’s still feeding —“ He broke off, staring at his hands with dawning horror. They were covered in my blood, but beneath the scarlet coating, his skin still pulsed with power—veins of light visible beneath the surface, as though his divine essence had broken free of its mortal container and couldn’t be contained again.

Despite the pain, despite the darkness creeping ever closer at the edges of my vision, I felt a surge of something like triumph. I had done this. I had broken through his careful control, had made him forget himself so completely that his power had turned on him as surely as it had turned on me.

I managed a smile, feeling blood bubble between my lips. “You... lose,” I whispered, the words barely audible.

His head snapped up, eyes meeting mine with a flash of the familiar anger that had defined our relationship for so long. But beneath it now was something new—something almost like fear.

“This isn’t a game, Mireille,” he growled, but the effect was somewhat diminished by the tremor in his voice. “You’re dying.”

“Worth it,” I managed, still smiling through the blood. “To see... your face... like this.”

His expression hardened, the momentary vulnerability giving way to a more familiar mask of cold fury. But his hands still shook as he tried again to stem the bleeding, pressing against my wounds with renewed determination.

The pain when he touched me was beyond bearing, a white-hot agony that obliterated thought. I think I must have lost consciousness for a moment, because when I next became aware of my surroundings, Valen was no longer touching me. He had backed away, risen to his feet, and was staring down at

me with an unreadable expression.

“I can let you die,” he said, his voice soft. “It would be a mercy. You’ve been begging for it since the beginning.”

Before I could respond, a new voice cut through the heavy air of my cell —not in my head this time, but audible, projecting from the cell next to mine.

Death’s voice, but different from how he spoke to me—colder, more formal, with an edge of contempt that I’d never heard directed at me.

“Have you broken your plaything again, brother?”

Valen’s head snapped up, his attention shifting to the wall that separated my cell from Death’s. His expression hardened completely, any vulnerability shuttering behind a mask of cool disdain.

“This doesn’t concern you, brother,” he replied, his voice regaining some of its usual control.

Death laughed, the sound echoing strangely through the stone. “Doesn’t it? I’ve saved her once before, I could do it again.”

I was floating too far from myself, the pain creating a strange distance between my mind and my failing body. Gods playing their divine games. It made a terrible kind of sense.

“What will you give me this time, Vharok?” Death’s use of the god’s name seemed deliberately provocative. “You’ve already removed two of my chains. How many more would you remove to save your little toy? How much more of my power would you restore?”

Valen growled, taking another step away from me. “Don’t play games with me. Name your price.”

“Complete freedom.” Death’s voice was flat, unyielding. “All chains removed.”

“Impossible.” Valen’s response was immediate, almost instinctive. “You know I can’t do that.”

I coughed again, the sound wet and alarmingly weak. Both gods fell silent, their attention returning to my failing body. The pain was receding now, replaced by a creeping numbness that I knew was far more dangerous. I was slipping away, my grasp on consciousness growing tenuous.

“She’ll die,” Valen said finally, his voice strangely hollow. “If neither of us heals her, she’ll die.”

“Yes,” Death agreed, something soft and almost sad entering his tone.

Valen was silent for a long moment as he looked down at me. I stared back at him through half-lidded eyes, no longer able to focus properly, my

vision blurring at the edges.

“If she dies, she would be trapped like all the others,” Valen said finally, as if to himself. “Caught before the void without passage. I could still reach her.”

He knelt beside me once more, careful not to touch me, his eyes studying my face with an intensity that might have been uncomfortable had I the strength to care.

“I won’t release any more of your chains,” he said, speaking to Death but looking at me. “I have not completed my revenge just yet.”

“Then she dies,” Death said simply.

Valen’s jaw tightened, a muscle jumping beneath the skin. He leaned closer to me, his voice dropping, meant for my ears alone.

“This isn’t over between us, Princess,” he murmured, something like reluctant resignation coloring his tone. “You are still mine. I can still reach you. Your death is merely… inconvenient.”

Without another word, Valen turned and stalked from the cell, his movements stiff and controlled as though he were holding himself together by sheer force of will. The door slammed behind him with a metallic clang that reverberated through the dungeon, the sound of his retreating footsteps fading until only silence remained.
