CHAPTER TWENTYݍSIX

BLOOMING AGONY

alen stepped further into my cell, the torchlight casting half his face inV shadow as he assessed my naked form with a measured gaze.

Unlike previous nights, surprise had broken through his careful mask—a slight widening of his eyes, a momentary pause in his breathing. I had disrupted our ritual, stolen his first act of domination, and for one brief, satisfying moment, I held the upper hand.

But whatever power I stole from him always seemed fleeting, a wavering flame that never remained with me for long.

“This is an... interesting choice,” he said, circling me with deliberate slowness. Each footfall seemed calculated, the steady rhythm of a predator preparing to strike. “I must confess, I’ve grown rather fond of unwrapping you myself.”

He stopped behind me, close enough that I could feel the unnatural heat radiating from his body. Unlike the damp chill of the dungeon, Valen burned, as if molten rock ran beneath his skin instead of blood.

Maybe it did.

“Did you think it wise to deny me this pleasure?” he asked, his voice dropping to that intimate register he used when he wanted to unsettle me.

His hand appeared at my side, hovering just above my skin without touching. I braced myself for pain, for the sharp sting of a cut or the deeper burn of his power flowing through me. Instead, his fingers made contact with a gentleness so unexpected it nearly drew a gasp from my lips. He traced the

curve of my waist, the touch feather-light, almost reverent.

“Nothing to say?” Valen continued, his hand moving upward along my ribcage. “Not even now, when you’ve tried to change the rules of our little game?”

I kept my gaze fixed on the cell door, refusing to acknowledge his touch even as my skin prickled beneath his fingers. This was new territory—no blade, no blood, just the disquieting gentleness that felt more invasive than any cut.

He moved to stand before me, his tall frame blocking my view of the door. His fingers trailed across my collarbone, still unnervingly gentle, then down between my breasts, following the pale line of an old scar. My heart thundered beneath his touch, a terrified bird in a too-small cage.

“I’ve grown weary of your silence, Princess,” he said, his expression hardening. “Seven nights of cuts and pain, and not so much as a whimper.”

His fingers curled suddenly against my hip, grip firm but not bruising. “And now this little act of defiance. Removing your clothes before I can tear them from you.”

His other hand rose to my face, knuckles grazing my cheek with impossible softness. “Do you think it changes anything? The silence, the discarded clothing... they’re charming, really. Like a toddler throwing pebbles at a mountain.” His grip at my hip tightened further, and I bit the inside of my cheek to keep from gasping. “Cute, but ultimately futile.”

I kept my expression blank. He thought me so calculated. The truth was simpler than he imagined—I needed to hold on to the things that were mine, choices in a world where choice had been stripped from me along with everything else.

“If you refuse to cry out in pain,” Valen mused, circling around to my back, his hand never leaving my skin as he moved. “Perhaps I should try a different approach.”

His palm flattened against my abdomen warm and steady, then slid up my ribs. His grip tightened briefly, fingers pressing into flesh but stopping short of bruising. “What would you do, I wonder, if instead of pain, I offered you pleasure?”

My muscles tensed involuntarily at the suggestion, a reaction I couldn’t hide while suspended from the ceiling. Valen noticed—of course he did—and I felt a smile curve his lips, dark satisfaction radiating from him.

“Do you remember, Princess?” His thumb traced small circles against my

protruding ribs, each movement precise and deliberate. “Our wedding night?

Before the screaming began. Before you knew who I truly was.”

The memory surfaced unbidden—his hands on my skin, his mouth at my throat, the shameful heat that had built between us before the world collapsed into blood and death. I pushed it down, burying it beneath layers of hatred and disgust.

“I dream of it,” Valen continued, his voice dropping lower. “How responsive you were. How perfectly you moved beneath me.” His lips brushed my shoulder, the contact so light it might have been imagined. “I wonder if I could coax those sounds from you again, even now. Even despite the pain I’ve caused you.”

My body betrayed me with a shudder that rippled from my shoulders to my knees. It wasn’t desire—at least, not entirely. It was confusion, revulsion, and beneath it all, the terrible knowledge that my body remembered the pleasure at his hands. The most potent pleasure I’d ever felt from a man.

His fingers moved to trace the curve of my jaw, then down the column of my throat. “Won’t you speak to me? I’ve missed that sharp tongue of yours.”

I remained silent, though it cost me more than it had on previous nights.

The changed nature of his torture—this strange, unsettling gentleness—was more difficult to withstand than clean, honest pain. Pain had boundaries, familiar territories. This... this confusion of signals left me unmoored, uncertain where to plant my feet.

“So stubborn,” he murmured, something like admiration coloring his tone. His hand pulled me backward, bringing our bodies closer without quite touching. The heat of him seeped into my skin like an accusation. “I could force the words from you, you know. There are methods I haven’t yet employed. Ways to make silence more painful than any scream.”

His lips brushed my ear, his breath warm against my neck. “But I think I prefer to hear you speak of your own accord. To know that I’ve earned those words, whatever they might be.”

Valen moved to stand before me once more, his hand slipping to the small of my back. His eyes traveled over my face with an intensity that felt almost physical.

The chains above me clinked softly as my weight shifted, instinctively leaning toward his warmth despite my mind’s desperate commands to remain still. It was a small movement, nearly imperceptible, yet again he noticed. His smile widened, satisfaction evident in the curve of his lips.

His hand at my back pressed more firmly, drawing me another inch closer. The fabric of his tunic brushed against my breasts, the contact sending an unwelcome jolt through my nerve endings. My breath hitched, the sound loud in the silence of the cell.

“I need to hear your voice,” he said, and for a heartbeat, I thought I detected something almost like pleading beneath the command. His fingers traced the curve of my cheek, then brushed across my lower lip. “Tell me you hate me. Tell me you wish me dead. Tell me anything.”

The words slipped out before I could recapture them, breaking seven

nights of carefully cultivated silence.

“I don’t hate you.”

Valen froze, his hand stilling against my face as if I’d struck him.

Surprise flickered across his features, quickly replaced by wariness. He hadn’t expected these words. Perhaps hadn’t expected any words at all after so many nights of silence.

“No?” he asked, voice carefully controlled.

Now that I had begun, the words flowed more easily, although rough with disuse. “Hate would require me to feel something for you.” I met his gaze directly, a small smile twisting my lips.

His eyes darkened, pupils expanding until only a thin ring of iris remained visible.

“You want me to hate you because hate would mean I care,” I said, the dam broken. “It would mean I’ve invested something of myself in you—my emotions, my energy. That I think of you beyond these sessions.” I offered a cold smile. “But I don’t. The moment you leave my cell, you cease to exist for me.”

A muscle in his jaw twitched, a crack in his composure. His hand at my back spasmed, grip turning punishing as if he could anchor himself in my skin.

I tilted my head slightly, the movement pulling at the chains as I dropped my voice to a whisper. “You are nothing to me.”

Something flared in his eyes then—not the cold anger I had expected, but something hotter, more volatile. His hand moved to grip my face, the touch no longer gentle. “Let’s test that theory, shall we?”

Valen’s hand slid from my face to my throat, his thumb tracing the hollow between my collarbones with deliberate precision. Each movement was an exercise in control—measured, unhurried, as if he had all of eternity

to map the contours of my body.

“Indifference,” he mused, his fingers trailing down to the curve where my shoulder met my neck. “Such a delicate lie to maintain. Tell me, Princess, if you truly feel nothing, then it shouldn’t matter what I do to you, should it?”

I squeezed my eyes shut, trying to find that place of emptiness I had discovered during previous tortures, that void where pain couldn’t reach. But it eluded me now, as if Valen’s new approach had somehow blocked my escape routes, forcing me to remain present in my body.

He circled behind me again, his footsteps silent on the stone floor. I felt his presence like a shadow, darker and more substantial than the ones cast by torchlight. His hands found my shoulders, thumbs pressing into the tense muscles at the base of my neck. The touch was firm but gentle, almost like a caress to ease the soreness.

“Your body is so… eloquent,” he said, voice low and intimate in my ear.

“Feel how it responds to me.” His fingers traced the path of a scar that curved from my shoulder blade to the middle of my back. “Goosebumps rising beneath my touch. Muscles tensing, then yielding. Your pulse—“ his thumb pressed lightly against the side of my neck, finding the frantic beat there, “— racing. Like a frightened little bird’s.”

I tried to focus on my breathing, on maintaining the pretense of indifference, but my body had become a traitor. Each point of contact sent unwelcome sparks skittering across my nerve endings, a subtle current I couldn’t redirect or contain.

His hand slid around to my stomach, palm flat against the skin there. This close, I could smell him—clean linen and something darker beneath, like smoke and metal.

I could feel the solid warmth of his chest against my back, the controlled strength in the arm that held me. His lips brushed the nape of my neck, and I shuddered, unable to control my reaction.

It would be so easy to lean into his touch. So easy to surrender.

His free hand moved to cup my chin, thumb brushing across my lower lip, a fleeting touch that nonetheless sent a jolt through me. My mouth tingled in its wake, a sensation I refused to acknowledge as anything but revulsion.

“Do you know what fascinates me about you?” Valen asked, his breath ghosting across my bare skin as he turned my head to look at him. “Not your beauty, though that is considerable. Not your defiance, entertaining as it is.

It’s the contradiction you embody—strength and vulnerability, pride and

shame, hatred and...” he paused, his eyes locking with mine, “...what you are calling indifference.”

The thumb tracing my ribs shifted upwards to draw along the underside of my breast. My breath came faster as my nipple hardened in response, a whimper of need almost escaping my tightly closed lips with the threat of a fuller touch.

“So reactive,” he murmured, noting the reaction with evident satisfaction.

“And yet you claim you feel nothing for me. Curious, isn’t it, how the body reveals what the mind tries so hard to conceal?”

His hand drifted from my breast, tracing the path from my sternum to my navel. My stomach muscles contracted involuntarily, a response I hated even as it happened.

“I could touch you,” he said, his voice contemplative. “Properly, I mean.

As a man touches a woman he desires. I could make you forget, for a few moments at least, all that stands between us.” His fingers hovered over the junction of my thighs, close enough that I could feel their heat. “I could remind your body of the pleasure it once found in my hands.”

The suggestion sent a confused tangle of revulsion and unwanted heat through me. I wanted to recoil from the very idea, yet found myself unable to pull away, the chains above me restricting movement as effectively as they restricted choice.

His eyes met mine, searching for something I refused to reveal. “But that would hardly serve my purpose here, would it? I am meant to be torturing you, after all. Breaking you piece by piece until nothing remains but the raw material from which I can forge something new.”

Then he smiled, the expression carrying no warmth.

“Although,” he added, head tilting toward me in consideration, “perhaps there’s no reason those purposes can’t align. Pleasure and pain are merely different aspects of the same impulse, aren’t they? Different paths to the same destination.”

Slowly, as if allowing me the time to pull away, he leaned forward and pressed his lips to the curve of my shoulder. The contact was so unexpected, so jarringly intimate, that for a moment I could form no thought beyond

bewilderment.

Then came the pain.

It started as warmth, blooming outward from the point of contact, but rapidly transformed into a deep, throbbing ache that seemed to penetrate to

the bone. I gasped before I could catch myself, the sound sharp in the quiet cell.

I glanced down in horror to see a dark bruise spreading from the place his lips had touched, the skin mottling purple and black as if I’d been struck with tremendous force.

Valen pulled back, observing his handiwork with evident fascination.

“Blood,” he murmured, reaching out to trace the edges of the bruise with gentle fingers. “Usually it enjoys to be drawn out—“ he skimmed a finger along one of the older cuts across my abdomen, “—but it can be manipulated to stay within. Driven from capillaries, rupturing vessels beneath the skin.”

His hand moved to my collarbone, fingers pressing lightly against the skin. I watched in sick fascination as another bruise blossomed beneath his touch, spreading like spilled ink across pale parchment.

“Lovely,” he whispered, his eyes darkening as he watched the mark form.

“You wear my touch so well.”

Before I could recover, his lips found the place below my ear, pressing firmly against the sensitive skin. Again came that initial moment of warmth, followed by the deep, penetrating ache. This time I was prepared, biting down hard on the inside of my cheek to keep from making a sound.

Valen still noticed. His hand came up to cradle the back of my head, fingers tangling in my hair with deceptive gentleness, as if to both comfort and hold me still.

He moved lower, his mouth finding the curve of my breast. This kiss was different—slower, almost reverent, his lips parting slightly against my skin.

The pain, when it came, bloomed more gradually, building in waves that made my chest constrict and my breath catch in my throat. A sound escaped me then—not quite a moan, not quite a whimper, but something caught between the two.

“Yes,” Valen breathed, his eyes lifting to meet mine, pupils dilated with what could have been bloodlust or something significantly more dangerous.

“Let me hear you, Princess.”

I wanted to look away, to hide the confusion and unwanted heat spreading through me, but his grip on my hair tightened, forcing me to maintain eye contact as his mouth descended to the underswell of my breast, leaving another mark in its wake.

His mouth moved to my ribs, teeth grazing the sensitive skin before his lips pressed firmly against it. The bruise that formed there was darker than

the others, almost black at its center. I watched in fascination as it spread, tendrils of discoloration following the paths of blood vessels beneath my skin.

His fingers traced the pattern of bruises he had created, each touch gentle yet possessive. The contrast was jarring—tenderness overlaid with violence, care mingled with cruelty. It was as if he wanted to worship the canvas even as he damaged it, to honor what he destroyed.

“You wear my power so beautifully,” he murmured, his voice low enough that it might have been mistaken for affection in any other context. “Like you were made for this—for me.”

Before I could form a response, he released my hair and knelt before me, hands gripping my thighs to steady my suspended form. The position brought his face level with my abdomen, his breath warm against my navel. There was something uniquely humiliating about this posture—the Blood King on his knees, yet still entirely in control, while I hung helpless above him.

“So many possibilities,” he murmured, his thumbs tracing circles on my inner thighs, each point of contact sending conflicting signals of pleasure and warning to my overwrought nerves. “Where next, princess? Where shall I leave my mark?”

My stomach clenched with anticipation and dread as his mouth pressed against my abdomen, just below my ribs. This time, I couldn’t suppress the shudder that ran through my entire body.

The bruise that formed was larger than the others, spreading across my stomach like spilled wine. Within its boundaries, I could feel my blood responding to his call—flowing in unnatural patterns, nerve endings singing with a sensation that defied description. Not quite pain, not quite pleasure, but something that contained elements of both.

I said nothing, focusing on the stone wall, trying to separate my consciousness from my body’s responses. But when his lips pressed against the soft flesh of my inner thigh, dangerously high, the deep groan that escaped me couldn’t be contained.

Valen’s eyes darkened at the sound—the iris nearly swallowed by pupil, and within the darkness, a hint of copper shimmered, betraying the god beneath the human mask. “What was that, Princess? Not indifference, surely.” His thumb traced small circles against the bruise he’d just created, sending sparks of sensation shooting directly to my core. “Tell me how you feel now.”

I pressed my lips together, refusing to answer. The question was a trap, and we both knew it. Any response—hatred, disgust, pain—would contradict my earlier claim of indifference. But Valen was no longer content with my silence.

His hand slid to my inner thigh, hovering just inches from the apex of my legs. “Shall I touch you here?” he asked, his voice dropping to a whisper.

“Shall I mark you where only I will ever see? Where you’ll feel the reminder of me with every step, every shift of your body?”

Rationality abandoned me in that moment, my body responding to his proximity, to the perverse intimacy of his touch, with a rush of heat that had nothing to do with revulsion. I felt myself lean closer to him, a physical reaction I couldn’t control no matter how my mind screamed against it.

He noticed—of course he did. Nothing escaped those ancient, predator’s eyes.

“Interesting,” he murmured, his free hand moving to my other thigh, higher now, close enough that his thumb could have brushed the exact spot I needed him. He studied my face as another bruise bloomed beneath his touch, watching for the conflicting signals of pain and unwanted arousal. “Very interesting indeed.”

Shame burned through me, hotter than any physical pain he had inflicted.

I wanted to close my legs, to hide this most intimate betrayal, but my body would not listen. Instead, my knees opened further, as if welcoming his touch.

“Ah, Princess,” Valen said, his voice rich with satisfaction. “We both know you are anything but indifferent.” His thumb brushed higher, finding the wetness there, undeniable evidence of my body’s response to him.

I turned my face away, unable to bear the triumph in his eyes. He stood abruptly, catching my chin, forcing me to meet his gaze as another bruise formed beneath his fingers.

“Look at me,” he commanded, all pretense of gentleness gone from his voice. “I want to see your eyes when you lie to yourself.”

His hand between my thighs moved slightly, thumb grazing my most sensitive flesh without penetrating. The touch sent a jolt of unwanted pleasure through me, mingling with the pain of the bruises that now decorated my inner thighs like obscene fingerprints.

My body arched toward him, the chains above me rattling with the sudden movement. The sound echoed through the cell, a metallic accusation

that made my cheeks burn hotter with shame. I was betraying myself, betraying everything I had sworn to uphold—my dignity, my hatred, my very sense of self.

“This means nothing,” I forced myself to say, though the words emerged strained and uneven. “I still feel nothing.”

Valen laughed softly, the sound like silk dragged across gravel. “Is that what you tell yourself? That your wet cunt means nothing? That your racing heart, your quickened breath, are merely instinctive responses?” His thumb pressed more firmly against me, causing my hips to jerk involuntarily. “Poor unwanted princess, still lying to herself.”

A moan escaped me before I could swallow it, the sound hanging between us like an admission. Valen’s eyes lit with victory, his free hand moving to cup my breast, thumb brushing across the nipple until it hardened beneath his touch.

“Indifference,” he said, leaning closer until his breath caressed my ear, “doesn’t feel like this.”

I shook my head, a jerky, desperate motion. I couldn’t want this. I

wouldn’t want this.

Gods, I wanted this.

“Do you want me to stop?” His fingers dipped lower, gathering the evidence of my arousal, spreading it with torturous slowness. “Tell me to stop, and I will. But mean it, Princess. Convince me.”

I opened my mouth, the command forming on my tongue, but what emerged instead was a broken moan as his finger slid inside me. My body clenched around the intrusion, welcoming rather than rejecting.

Valen’s smile was predatory, triumphant. “I thought not.”

Slowly, he worked his finger in and out of me, my muscles tensing as he curled it, finding that spot that made my vision blur at the edges. I bit my lip hard enough to taste blood, desperate to maintain some semblance of control even as my body surrendered to his ministrations.

“So wet,” he murmured, adding a second finger, stretching me in a way that made my knees numb. Only the chains kept me upright as pleasure coiled tighter in my core, building with an intensity that terrified me. “So responsive. Tell me again how you feel nothing.”

I squeezed my eyes shut, refusing to look at him, refusing to acknowledge what was happening. But my body betrayed me with every shuddering breath, every involuntary arch into his touch. The chains above me rattled

with each movement, a metallic counterpoint to the wet sounds of his fingers working between my thighs.

“Open your eyes,” Valen commanded, his hand moving from my breast to grip my jaw. “I want you to see who’s doing this to you. I want you to remember.”

When I refused, his thumb pressed harder against my clit, circling with merciless precision. A strangled sound tore from my throat, something between a sob and a moan.

“Open. Your. Eyes.” Each word punctuated by the thrust of his fingers, deeper, more demanding.

My eyes flew open, meeting his gaze just as he added a third finger, stretching me in a way that sent sparks shooting up my spine. His pupils were blown wide, the irises crimson around depthless black.

His movements quickened, fingers thrusting deeper, the heel of his palm grinding against my clit with each movement. My body tightened around him, the coil of pleasure winding impossibly taut. I tried to hold back, to deny him this final victory, but my hips betrayed me, grinding against his hand with shameless need.

“Stop fighting it,” he whispered, his voice rough with something dangerously close to desire. “Give in. Show me who owns you.”

I tried to resist, to stop the tide rising within me, but my body was no longer my own. When his thumb replaced his palm, circling that sensitive bundle of nerves while his fingers curled inside me, I shattered. Pleasure crashed through me in merciless waves, my body convulsing around his fingers as I cried out, the sound torn from somewhere deep and primal within me.

Valen’s smile was victorious as he worked me through the aftershocks, prolonging my humiliation with each deliberate stroke. When I finally stilled, trembling and spent, he withdrew his fingers slowly, making sure I felt every inch of their departure.

He raised his hand between us, fingers glistening with evidence of my shame. “Indifference does not come all over my fingers, Princess,” he murmured, his voice silken with satisfaction, his own arousal obvious by the tent of his pants. “Remember that the next time you claim to feel nothing for me.”

Something broke inside me then, from my release, my silence, my humiliation. A single tear slipped from the corner of my eye, tracking a warm

path down my cheek before falling to the bloodstained ground.

Valen went still, his entire body freezing as if caught in amber. His eyes fixed on that tear with an intensity that bordered on reverence, his breathing suspended as he watched it fall.

“There,” he whispered, something like wonder in his voice. “There you are.”

The tear hadn’t been intentional. It hadn’t been a calculated surrender or a strategic retreat. It had simply been too much—too many conflicting sensations, too many contradictions to hold within myself without something giving way.

Valen seemed to understand this, his expression shifting to one of profound satisfaction. He had breached my defenses at last, found the fracture in my armor and exploited it with devastating precision.

Another tear escaped, this one falling faster, as if pulled by the gravity of the first. Valen watched its descent with the same fascination, the same hungry gratification.

His thumb brushed the wet track on my cheek, gentle as a lover’s caress.

“Beautiful,” he murmured. “Perfect.”

Before I could respond, he leaned forward and pressed his lips to mine.

The kiss was gentle, almost chaste, his mouth soft against my torn lip. Then came the familiar bloom of pain, spreading from the point of contact.

I felt the bruise beginning, and instead of pulling away, he deepened the contact, tongue tracing the seam of my mouth.

The effect was immediate and overwhelming. Heat exploded behind my eyes, racing through my veins like liquid fire. My lips tingled, then burned, the sensation spreading across my face and down my throat. I made a sound against his mouth—half protest, half surrender—and he swallowed it, one hand sliding into my hair to hold me in place for his terrible, wonderful assault.

When he finally pulled away, I gasped for air, feeling as though I’d been drowning and rescued simultaneously. My lips throbbed with what I knew must be a bruise as dark as the others marking my body.

“There,” he said, his thumb brushing across my newly bruised lips. “Now you’ll remember me with every word you speak. With every breath you take.

With every morsel of food that passes these lips.” His eyes met mine, intense and unblinking. “You’ll think of me even when I’m not here. Try again to tell me you feel indifferent toward me.”

He was right—the simple act of drawing breath across my sensitized lips sent shivers of pain through me. I would remember him long after he left this cell, contrary to what I told him before this torture began. I closed my eyes, trying to center myself, to find some core of resistance that hadn’t yet been compromised.

Valen stepped back, surveying his handiwork with evident satisfaction.

My body was a canvas of dark contusions, blooming like crescent-shaped violets in a moonlit field. From the hollow of my throat to the tender insides of my thighs, his touch had left its indelible mark. My breath still came hard, shallow and ragged, from the pleasure he had torn from me.

“Beautiful,” he said again, the word carrying a weight of possession that made my skin crawl even as heat continued to pool low in my belly. “I think we’re making progress, Princess. Real progress.”

He turned toward the door, movements casual as if we’d just shared a pleasant conversation rather than an escalation of his torment. “The guards will come to let you down at some point,” he said over his shoulder. “Rest well. The next we see each other promises to be... exciting.”

Then he was gone, his footsteps fading down the corridor, leaving me hanging from the chains, bruised and aching and still, shamefully, aroused.

I closed my eyes against fresh tears that threatened to fall, unwilling to give him more of my emotional release, even in his absence. The chains above rattled softly as I shifted, seeking a position that might ease the strain on my shoulders, the ache in my wrists. But there was no comfort to be found —only the promise of more darkness, more pain, more confusion when tomorrow came.

The real wound wasn’t the bruises, painful as they were. It was the knowledge that my body had betrayed me, had responded to Valen’s touch with desire rather than simply pain. What did that make me? What twisted, broken thing was I becoming in the darkness of this dungeon?

Beneath that, another horror dawned—the awareness that the wall separating my cell from my harbinger’s was thin enough that he would have heard everything. Every gasp, every exchange, every moment of weakness I had shown. How I had come apart at my torturer’s hands. The thought of him —that ancient, enigmatic presence—bearing witness to my degradation added a fresh layer of shame to an already unbearable situation.

And beneath it all, the terrible, unwelcome knowledge that some small, twisted part of me was already anticipating the Blood God’s return.
